My Hero
When
you think of a hero, do you think of special powers, or people in costumes wearing tights with underwear over them? Well that’s not what I think of. A hero to me is a person
you want to be like. My hero is my dad.
He is courageous, inspiring, and determined.
My
dad is courageous. Once when we went hiking, he had to carry my sister down the
mountain. At the top she had run, fallen, and scraped her knee. We were almost at the bottom, when I saw all of these flies. So,
I walked around them. As Dad got closer to them, I said quietly, “Dad.”
He didn’t hear me but he saw them. He walked through them anyway. AS he walked through we realized they were giant wasps. They got mad and started stinging my dad. So my dad ran with
Leah as the wasps started to chase him. Finally he out chased them and got to the bottom of the mountain. Of course
my sister didn’t get stung. However, my dad had many stings so he put mud
on his legs and said, “ ouch,” then “ oh well”. He was
so brave. In June of this year my dad was working in New York City, when he fell
30 feet from a building. He broke his heels and back. It has been a long recovery. My dad has had complications
and still has not been able to walk. However, he is determined that he will do
whatever the doctor’s tell him and he will walk again. He had the courage
to do it even though it may be painful.
My
dad is also inspiring. He always has a good attitude even when something’s
wrong. Recently, because of his injury, they had to put leeches on his foot for
his infection. He had to be woken up every three hours, even when he was trying
to sleep. He didn’t like it, but never got all gloomy. He showed me that you don’t need to be upset even for the big things.
He also inspired me when we went to play golf on my first real course. I
was so excited, but my dad ws such a good player. He encouraged me the whole
time and helped me. We both played terrible.
48 was my score and 26 was my dad’s. My dad won, but he showed me
how to play better. Now I can be just like him, and we can go to the tournament
for kids.
My
dad was really determined. When I was 5 almost 6, I wanted to learn how to ride
a bike with no training wheels. But everytime I wobbled I’d get off. My dad made me get right back on. I was
livid with him. I was determined not to do it.
So, he put one training wheel on for a while and then took it off. This
made it easier to learn somehow. He wouldn’t let me go back inside, so
I was really mad. Within an hour, I was riding a two-wheeler because he was determined
to teach me even though I’d been so stubborn. Once when were in New Jersey,
I accidentally locked myself in the bathroom. I could not figure out how to get
out. I started to get upset and cry. My
dad tried to talk to me and explain what to do, but I couldn’t figure it out.
For a second, he thought about kicking the door down, but instead he got
a screwdriver and took apart the door knob. He was determined to get me out.
My
dad is my hero, my friend, and my father. He’s courageous, inspiring, and
determined. I love him a lot, and hope to be like him one day.

Liam, Age 6 Orenda Elementary Ever since the first inauguration of George Washington in 1789, the process of
this historic ceremony has stayed the same. For example, the President-elect gets sworn in as the next
President of the United States of America at noon sharp, and for the last two hundred years of our country’s history,
all of the presidents have been white. In 2008, this has all changed with the election of the first African-American
President, Barack Obama. On January 20, 2009, Obama accepted this office at his inauguration.
He addressed the nation. His words, however, were not the words of a black man or the words of a
white man; they were the words of a man who wants to change the world. In President Obama’s inaugural address he stated, “Today I say to
you that the challenges we face re real, they are serious and they are many. They will not be met in a
short span of time. But know this America: They will be met.” Why do you think
Barack Obama knows this? I think it is because the economy is going through a period of suffrage, and if
our economy is, that means we are too. People are losing jobs and businesses are closing. Barack
Obama’s plan is to have a stimulus package. He wants money from the federal government to be put
into the economy so jobs will increase. This will stimulate the economy to begin to improve. In President Obama’s
inaugural address he stated, “We will begin to responsibly leave Iraq to its people, and forge a hard-earned peace in
Afghanistan.” Obama acknowledges that the war in Iraq has been going on too long. Thousands of lives
are being lost. Barack Obama’s plan to stop this raging war is to carefully take American troops
out of the Middle East by the summer of 2010. After this delicate and lengthy operation, American forces
would perform limited missions, like going after remnants of Al Qaeda in Mesopotamia. I think this is a
right decision. Taking our troops out of the war needs to be done, but it needs to be done slowly to protect
those in foreign lands, as well as those who need to exit safely. In President Obama’s inaugural address he stated, “We will harness
the sun and the wind and the soil to fuel our cars and run our factories.” In previous years global
warming has become a huge issue for our planet. With car exhaust and factory smoke polluting our air, I
believe we need to find ways to decrease poisonous emissions. These problems started with evolving technology,
but I believe that new technology can solve them. Barack Obama has made American history. I believe Barack Obama
and his tactics. I think he is a humble and caring man who cares deeply about his fellow citizens and their
future. With perseverance and determination I believe Barack Obama will lead America in the right direction
with grace. As he stated in his inaugural address, “Starting today we must pick ourselves up, dust
ourselves off, and begin again the work of remaking America.” Kelsey Roche, Age 12St. Catherine of Siena, Albany
